Tensile Strength

The strength of things is measured in a few different ways. When looking at the strength of something as it applies to its ability to withstand a pull, you are talking about tensile strength.

Different structures are made to do different things. The ability of the structure to do its job depends on how well it is made. Often the test of how well something is made will depend on its strength. The strength which is being talked about can be measured in two main ways. The first is the ability to withstand being compacted when pressure is exerted upon it. The second is to withstand weight which is pulled against the material. This second measure is known as the tensile strength of the material. It plays an important role in things like line, hooks, anchors and more. By measuring the strength, you are able to determine how much pressure can be exerted upon the item before it weakens.

There are three things which are often measured using tensile strength as a determining factor behind how the elements will be used. These include things like ductile materials, brittle materials, and liquids and gases. The importance of these strengths depends on where they can be used as well as what must be used against them in order to get the results that you are looking for. These are important in conducting safety tests as well as making sure that the equipment or items being used in conjunction with the materials will be used properly to get the desired results.

How Strength Is Measured with Ductile Materials

There are two main ways that ductile materials can be measured for their strength. The first way is to measure the ability of the material to deform in an elastic manner. This means that once the weight is unloaded from the material, it will return to its original state. The plastic measurement will indicate at which point the material will become deformed in a permanent manner after the load has been removed. There is also a consideration in regards to how often a load can be removed until the material becomes weakened and brittle.

How Strength Is Measured with Brittle Materials

Brittle materials have a tensile strength which is measured based upon at what point there will be a crack or a break in the material. Things like carbon fiber or concrete will show their weakness through cracks in the material. These can be on the microscopic level or they can be visible to the naked eye. It is important to bear in mind that breaks on the microscopic level have an ultimate negative effect on the overall materials strength.

How Strength Is Measured with Liquids and Gases

When measuring the tensile strength of a liquid or gas, you are measuring the amount of pressure which will need to be exerted upon the material in order to get a desired effect. This includes suction as it pertains to water or other liquids which are being pumped. It can also pertain to the amount of pressure which is needed to draw gas through a line using a vacuum. The strength is determined by the composition as well as the amount which is being drawn.
